Transition year arrangements

Overview

The new IRM International Diploma in Risk management was launched in October 2007.  For students already part way through their studies, the academic year 2007/8 will be a transition year, with both the original Diploma syllabus and the new International Diploma syllabus taught alongside each other. From 2008, only the new IRM International Diploma will be available.

Which syllabus students follow depends largely on how far they have progressed through the original Diploma.

How will the changes to the new Diploma affect you?

New students need simply to enrol to the new IRM International Diploma. Please use the links to the left for more information.

If you are already a student of the original Diploma, you are encouraged to move directly onto the new Diploma; however both syllabuses will be run side by side for the academic year 2007/8.

PLEASE NOTE there will be NO re-take opportunities for students who fail a whole module or part of a module from the original syllabus after this date. All students will be required to move onto the new Diploma for the 2008/09 academic year.

In terms of structure, the main differences between the original and new diplomas are demonstrated below:

Original Syllabus
New Syllabus
Core subjects
5 modules, taken in any order

5 modules, taken in a given order

(new Diploma level 1)

Specialisms
1 module

2 modules

(new Diploma level 2)

Assessment of course

- Six 3-hour exams (one per module)

- Six 2500 - 3000 word assignments (one per module)

- Seven 3-hour exams (one per module)

- One 8000 word assignment submitted at the end of the course

(new Diploma level 3)

The following transitional arrangements have been devised to deal effectively with these changes.

• Students with three or fewer modules left to complete the current Diploma can attempt to complete their remaining modules under the current syllabus by the end of the 2007/08 academic year.

• Students who have partly completed a module and who still need to complete an assessment element (exam or assignment), have ONE more opportunity under the current syllabus to pass that module. Alternatively, they can move onto the new Diploma to complete the remaining modules if they wish. If students pass the new Diploma within two years (by the end of the 2008/09 academic year), they will be exempt from Level 3: the practical assignment.

• Students who move directly onto the new Diploma and have completed three or more modules under the current Diploma will be exempt from taking Level 3: the practical assignment, if they pass the Diploma within two years, by the end of the 2008/09 academic year.

• Students who have to complete four or more modules under the current syllabus must move directly onto the new Diploma and will be exempt from the modules with the closest fit under the new syllabus. Students, who complete the Diploma within two years, by the end of 2008/09, will be exempt from Level 3: the practical assignment.

• Students who do not complete their specialist module during 2007/08 will be required to take two specialisms under the new Diploma.

Specialisms

For the 2007/8 academic year, all the specialist subject modules will follow the original format and syllabus, moving to the new syllabus for the academic year 2008/9.

Students who do not complete their specialist module during 2007/08 will be required to take two specialisms under the new Diploma.
