A Perspective from the Midlands - WSP Offices, The Mailbox, Birmingham. Thursday 11th July
Written by Wes Cadby - Chair of the Infrastructure SIG; Group Head of Risk Management, J. Murphy & Sons
We held our second ever IRM SIG event in Birmingham in July at the fantastic new WSP offices in the Mailbox.
We had a range of speakers for the day talking across a range of subjects. It was a good chance for those attending to make new contacts and share ideas during the lunch and breaks.
Our host for the day: Daniella James-Daniels - WSP
Dr David Worsley - WSP
Dr David Worsley gave us a detailed talk on how businesses cases are developed in early project development, but most importantly, how using risk management in the development of business cases supports the delivery of outcomes.
Gareth Brown - Turner&Townsend
We also had Gareth Brown talk to us about lessons learnt feeding into risk management, and the huge benefits it can provide, but also looking at the human reasons as to why we often fail to heed the lessons from previous projects.
Danielle Mudd - Dublin Airport
We also had Danielle Mudd fly in especially from Dublin to talk to us about the innovative approaches to risk management they are implementing on the Dublin Airport expansion project.
I was our final speaker, and I chose to discuss my views on risks to the construction industry where I covered factors such as Government spending reviews and political uncertainty, demographics and how that will shape our industry, al; the way through to more immediate risks such as Brexit.
A fantastic and well attended day. For any further details on any of the subjects, feel free to contact the SIG or the speakers direct.
