Jobs in Risk Management

Whether you are just about to embark on your career or are seeking an opportunity to enhance your existing job opportunities, risk management can give you the chance to become a pivotal player in whichever organisation you have chosen to work. Why? Because risk management is a key discipline in its own right, as well as meeting the requirements of corporate governance and best value. Few organisations today would make any major decisions concerning new projects without first assessing the risks involved.

Where can risk management take you?

------- Risk Manager in the Public or Private Sectors --------

Your role will be to make decisions, with others, relating to the financing and control of risks for a specific group, company or organisation. You will need a wide range of skills and some experience to get here because you could be protecting the very essence of the business.

-------- Risk Management Adviser --------

Working with one of the larger companies you will advise organisations, which don’t have in-house risk management resources, on preparing and implementing their strategies. You will need a greater spread of experience for this type of role but there’s plenty of variety.

-------- Risk Specialist --------

Usually involved in improving risk standards, your role will be to work with the risk manager or consultant in key areas such as fire, security or health and safety. You will need even greater specialist knowledge and skills and, almost certainly, a qualification in your chosen field.

The top jobs carry enormous responsibility. There’s a lot of training and experience to acquire before you reach this level but it’s worth it. Quite apart from a top salary, you’ll get all the satisfaction and sense of achievement anybody could wish for in a career at the sharp end of management.

What about you?

So, you like the sound of risk management and you know what you need to do to get into it, but you’re not quite sure whether you’re the right person for the job. Basically you’ll need to be:

A good communicator – Your colleagues may not fully understand the importance of risk management to the organisation
Friendly and persuasive – You may have to argue your case
Analytical – You will have to consider all the potential risks and how they might impact on the organisation
Patient – You can’t afford to lose your cool – too much depends on your ability to think clearly and rationally
